Burn Ban


Burning Ban: June 1 - September 30 annually.

  • The burn ban is in affect June 1 through September 30.  
  • Outdoor fires burning debris may not be conducted between these dates. 
  • Small cooking fires are allowed unless otherwise prohibited due to extreme fire dangers. See below.
  • Restricted open flame devices, meaning using devices liable to start a fire in moderate fire hazard areas are not allowed.

open burning: October 1 - May 31

Open burning is allowed from October 1 - May 31 annually. You must meet the following criteria.

  • Before burning notify the Fire Department of open burning by using the contact link below at this site or by calling 509 784 2941 leaving message. 
  • Burning pile of natural debris must only be 4x4x4.
  • One person must be at burn site at all times.
  • Fire must be extinguished by dusk.
  • You must have means to put the fire out should it escape.
  • Burning yard waste, such as leaves, grass, brush and other yard trimmings is allowed.
  • Burning to clear land of trees, stumps, shrubbery, or other natural vegetation is allowed.
  • Orchard burning of limbs, trees and branches is allowed.
  • Orchard removal of trees to clear land for development call Department of Ecology for a permit 1-509-575-2490.
  • For Agricultural burns and burns that are  permitted by D.O.E. call Department of Ecology to confirm it is a burn day 1-800-406-5322 recording prompts #1 and #2.
  • For residential natural vegetation burns check the D.O.E website for current burn information and air stagnation notifications.


Prohibited at all times:

  • Burning that can not be controlled, presents a fire or smoke hazard to neighboring properties.
  • Burning of garbage.
  • Burning in burn barrels.

Cooking fires

Residents may have cooking fires so long as the fire is in an approved pit or area, free of burnable material, ample water on-site to put out the fire. The fire must be extinguished when you leave. This fire must be attended at all times.


Burn bans may go into effect that ban all fires in extreme hazard conditions.
